The crash happened in Hartford County on Thursday, Feb. 8 just before 7 a.m. on Interstate 84 West in Manchester, according to Connecticut State Police.
According to authorities, a Hyundai Genesis had been traveling east of the Exit 61 on-ramp in the center lane when a Nissan Juke also traveling west in the HOV lane veered across the swale and left lane and collided with the Genesis.
The collision caused the Genesis to veer into the grassy area to the right of the highway, where it came to an uncontrolled rest.
The Juke also veered into this same grassy area, drove through a wooded area, re-entered the right shoulder, and collided with the center median concrete barrier after swerving through all lanes of travel. It finally came to a rest on the left shoulder of the highway, police said.
The driver of the Genesis was not injured and declined medical attention, while the driver of the Juke suffered minor injuries and was taken to Saint Francis Hospital.
However, the front right passenger of the Juke, 25-year-old East Hartford resident Mireilly Vega, suffered critical injuries and was taken to Hartford Hospital, where she was declared dead.
Both vehicles were later towed from the crash scene.
The crash is now under investigation by police. Anyone who saw the collision or may have dash camera footage is asked to call Trooper Michael Dean at (860) 534-1098 or by email at michael.dean@ct.gov.
